Physics and Engineering: About the NPU Forecast

The weather station is located on the rooftop of Helwig Recreation Center, and is a Davis Instruments Wireless Vantage Pro2 Plus™ with 24-Hr Fan Aspirated Radiation Shield. The unit transmits data wirelessly to a console and data logger located in the Helwig Center.

Every hour, the Vantage Pro2 Plus's™ console uses station readings of barometric pressure and trend, wind speed and direction, rainfall temperature, humidity, latitude and longitude, and time of year to make short-term forecasts of sky condition, precipitation, temperature change, and wind speed and direction. This forecast is summarized as the wview generated forecast icon and text shown on some of the NPU weather web pages. The forecast text is chosen from a list of 197 non-unique forecast rule possibilities while the icon is chosen from a list of 31 icon rule possibilities (though there are only 8 different icons). This is not an official National Weather Service forecast and must not be used as if it were. See the station console's specification sheet for more details.
